Tapes, in all their forms have always been central to John’s practice. From the practical utility of masking tape to the industrial varieties used in construction, development and everyday function, tape offers a creative immediacy that continually inspires his work. During his career, John was fortunate to travel regularly to Japan, often returning with half a suitcase filled with unique tapes discovered in the country’s stationery and homeware stores.
The artist is especially drawn to the effortless application of tape: it adheres instantly, requiring no additional steps, and its simple stripes, colours, and patterns can transform a surface into something unexpectedly refined. This versatility has made tape a key material in both his commercial projects and his fine art practice, where its playful immediacy and quiet precision remain endlessly compelling.
